What To Do In An Emergency


An emergency is generally described as anything that poses an immediate danger to the new home or it's inhabitants unless some sort of action is taken quickly. The following are the most common “emergency” situations that require immediate attention:

· Furnace outage when the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
· Plumbing leak occurs that requires shutting off the main water supply to the house.

First step is to consult the troubleshooting guide in the owner’s manual for the furnace. Also try the following troubleshooting tips, if they are not in the guide:

Make sure that:

...The manual power switch attached to the furnace is turned on.
...The furnace circuit breaker is turned on.
...The gas valve is fully open.
...The furnace front cover is correctly in place.
...The furnace filter is clean.
...Combustion air and exhaust accesses are clear of debris.
...The thermostat is set correctly.

Gas leaks

When a homeowner smells gas, other than those smells that seem normally associated with the use of gas appliances, CALL THE GAS SUPPLIER! They will test for leaks, and tell the homeowner  if there is a problem. If the problem is with the installation of a component, HMG will contact the appropriate contractor.

If the smell of gas is extremely strong, do not touch anything, leave the home immediately, and call the Gas Company or Fire Department from a neighbor's home.

Calling from the home or even flipping a light switch may cause an electric spark, which could ignite the gas if it is concentrated enough. Even a spark from static electricity due to walking or touching something in the home could ignite concentrated gas in the air.
